Alaso Academy Provides Sign Language Training and Disability Awareness Workshop in Zimbabwe, Bulawayo and Gweru

In April, from 7-14, Alaso Academy’s team travelled to Phumula South, in Bulawayo where it was hosted by Habek Seventh-Day Adventist Church. The team provided Sign Language lessons also conscientized the community about disability issues. These lessons were really welcomed by many as this led to many coming forward with their testimonies and also sharing their stories and experiences. Speaking to one of Alaso’s team members, one of the attendees showed gratitude and appreciated the lessons as she indicated that these had not only equipped the church but also the community at large as this has challenged people to take into consideration issues of inclusivity, accessibility, acceptability and accommodation.

Sign Language is a skill whose field is still at its infancy stages in Zimbabwe. This also means that there are still opportunities in the field of Sign Language as many people can acquire employment in the area. Also, having an appreciation of Sign Language is beneficiary as one does not know what tomorrow holds for them.

The same workshop was held again in Gweru in the same month at Southview SDA Church and the church was also equipped with Signing skills.
